What is K. R. Harriman’s Newsletter?

It is a project for which I could not come up with a good, encapsulating title. I will offer here for review, consideration, and feedback writings related to my interests in biblical studies, theology, history (specifically, ancient and Church history), the works of J. R. R. Tolkien, and a variety of fields connected thereto. I have started it here on Substack to keep the vast majority of work freely accessible to Internet searchers as well as to offer a free subscription option for those who share my interests and appreciate my offerings enough to want to keep up with them regularly.

Every week will feature at least three proper posts (usually on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday) along with one weekly update post sent on Sundays.

Why subscribe?

Subscribe to get full access to the newsletter and website. Never miss an update. Every new entry will be sent directly to your inbox. You might be interested in subscribing if you share any of my interests in the following:

  • Biblical studies: I specialize in the New Testament, but my scope covers the canon and related texts (particularly from Second Temple Judaism and the Classics). Besides specific texts, subjects covered here will include resurrection, the gospel, eschatology, Trinitarian theology (and its subsidiaries), the New Testament use of the Old Testament, theological ethics, identity formation, and many more.

  • Theology: This overlaps significantly with the above, as I also specialize in biblical/exegetical theology, but I also incorporate historical theology into discussions, and at various times we will be examining theological topics or articulated theological beliefs.

  • History: As stated above, I am primarily interested in ancient and Church history, particularly insofar as these establish contexts for the other areas of interest. This will also include deep dives on historical questions about matters like the history of holidays (especially Easter, Christmas, and Halloween) and clearing up the massive confusion that has accreted around them.

  • The works of J. R. R. Tolkien: Every second and fourth Tuesday of every month, I will make a Tolkien Tuesday post. This will include biblical and theological analyses of his life, works, and thinking, as well as some extensive reviews of adaptations of his works.

Why get a paid subscription?

A paid subscription will cost $5/month or $50/year. In addition to helping to keep this page going, paid subscriptions will get you access to some exclusive content, such as the following ideas I currently have:

  • Pre-published or “proof of concept” writings. This category includes articles that I plan to submit to journals and writings that I plan to incorporate into books I aim to write someday. You will be among the first to see both of these things. Additionally, this category includes “proof of concept” writings, which are more experimental in the sense that they are not in publishable form and I am not yet settled on including them in published work, but I offer them here to test how workable they are.

  • Q&As on given subjects. I want to open up discussions, whereby my subscribers can submit questions on a given subject, to which I will respond, and we can continue to dialogue on the matter. Anything related to the various subjects I cover on this Substack is fair game, but note again that each Q&A will be focused on a particular subject matter for the given post.

  • Monthly post suggestions. This is something I plan to implement in 2024. I am certainly not lacking for ideas, but I would like to give my readers who help keep this Substack going opportunities to suggest subjects for future posts.
